U.S. vehicle sales - major car brands December 2017-2018 In terms of monthly sales in the U.S., Ford has consistently been the top brand between December 2017 and December 2018. Ford sold almost 233,670 vehicles in its most active month, March 2018.
Are consumers losing interest in new light vehicles?

Between December 2017 and 2018, Ford was the best-selling car brand in the United States, with Chevrolet and Toyota as the runners-up. The top three brands all sold fewer vehicles in December 2018 than during the same month one year earlier.

Across the board, car manufacturers have been struggling to sell new light vehicles. One of the reasons for this might be the increasing average retail sales price of new light vehicles, which is forcing consumers’ interests towards used vehicles, sales of which have been on the rise recently; 2018 saw a 3.1 percent increase on the previous year and 8.5 percent compared with 2015. On the other hand, new sales of light vehicles remained relatively flat in 2017 and 2018 albeit on a high level with 2018 car and light truck sales of about 17.2 million units which puts the industry’s new light sales figures 1.4 percent lower in 2018 than in 2016. It is particularly passenger cars that do not move off the shelves easily, as light truck and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) both sold record numbers in 2018. Passenger cars now only represent 31 percent of all light vehicle sales in the U.S.
