Number of craft beer breweries in the United States in 2017, by state

Number of craft breweries in the U.S. in 2017, by state California had the most craft breweries of any state in the United States in 2017, by far. The state had 764 craft breweries in total, compared to 2nd and 3rd place Washington and Colorado who had 369 and 348 craft breweries respectively. Mississippi, Washington D.C., and North Dakota were all tied for last with 12 craft breweries each. Surprisingly, it was Pennsylvania, not California, that produced the most barrels of craft beer in 2017, 3.7 million to California’s 3.3 million.
The definition of a craft brewer

The Brewers Association qualifies a brewery as a craft brewery if it adheres to three pillars. Firstly, the production must be small, 6 million barrels of beer or less a year. Secondly, the operation must be mostly independent; at least seventy-five percent of the brewery must not be owned by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not a craft brewer. Lastly, the brewery must have a Brewer’s Notice from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, and they must make beer.

Craft brewing companies

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. was California’s top craft brewery in 2017, selling over one million barrels of beer. The brewer was the third leading craft brewer in the whole of the U.S. in 2018, with sales of nearly 250 million U.S. dollars. The nation's largest craft brewer in that year was Blue Moon, with over 338 million dollars in sales.
