Retail trade: number of retailers by industry in France 2021

As of February 2021, there were a total of 382 different retailer companies across nearly 20 industries on the French retail market. There were more than 130 different retailers in the apparel sector, and 52 which were specialized in the sale of footwear and leather goods. 28 retail companies were specialized in the branch of food retail.

Value of retail brands in France

  In a ranking of the most valuable retailers in France, the five leading companies were food retailers in 2019. The most valuable food retailer was the group E.Leclerc and was worth more than 48 billion euros, compared to about 1.5 billion for the leading clothing retailer Zara. Nevertheless, retail sale of clothing was the most important segment on the French specialized retail market.

Growth of e-commerce retail

  Considering emerging consumption practices, ordering clothing online is an example of growing habits of online ordering. Moreover, the e-commerce retail group Amazon was worth more than seven billion euros on the French market as of 2019. It was also the retail company with one of the highest growth rate between 2018 and 2019.

This table shows exactly the retailer of each retail-sector. We include retailers (chains) when they have minimal 5 stores minimum gold 3 million € turnover. Our primary focus is Europe and USA. The retailers in Food, Fashion, DIY and Consumer Electronics are listed below. Retail operations with several different formats and banners in one country are counted as one retailer. These retailers represent over 1.6 million stores / outlets.

Please note that some retailers are active in several sectors where there is some duplication in the numbers. The same goes for retailers active in several countries. It also explains the difference in the total number of retailers shown in this table."
