Mexico: gender gap index 2020, by area

In 2020, Mexico was one of the Latin American countries with the best gender gap index with an overall score of 0.75 points. That year, Mexico scored 0.47 in the area of political empowerment, which shows a gender gap of approximately 53 percent (women are 53 percent less likely than men to have equal opportunities in political participation).

However, figures also show that the femicide rate in Mexico has been on the rise with 1.5 per 100,000 Mexican women murdered on account of their gender in 2019, and a total of 976 reported femicides in the country in that same year.
