GCSE entries in major European languages in the United Kingdom (UK) 2010-2018

In 2018 there were approximately 117 thousand high school students in the UK taking French at GCSE level, compared with 88 thousand taking Spanish and 42 thousand taking German. During the provided time period, the number of students taking French and German has been declining since 2010 while those taking Spanish has increased. Spanish overtook German as the second most popular language in 2011 with 58,681 taking it at GCSE level, compared with 58,299 pupils taking German.
