GCSE entries in selected languages in the United Kingdom (UK) 2010-2017 This statistic displays the number of GCSE entries in French, German and Spanish from 2010 to 2017. As can be seen in this statistic, the number of students taking French and German has been declining since 2010 while those taking Spanish has increased. Spanish overtook German as the second most popular language in 2011 with 58,681 taking it at GCSE level, compared with 58,299 pupils taking German.
