Global transport CO₂ emissions by region 2021

The South-Pacific region produced the most transportation-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2021, at nearly 2.1 billion metric tons (GtCO₂). That year, transportation emissions increased across all regions in comparison to 2020, when emissions dropped due to the travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
North America has historically been the biggest contributor to global transportation emissions, but was surpassed by the Asia-Pacific region in 2017. This growth was mainly driven by rising transportation emissions in China. The transportation sector is a leading contributor to global emissions.
