The United States has been the biggest contributor to global transportation CO₂ emissions for more than three decades. In 2023, transportation emissions in the United States totaled 1.71 billion metric tons (GtCO₂). Up until 2014, the European Union was the second-largest contributor to global transportation emissions, but in 2014 it dropped below China. Transportation emissions in the East Asian country have soared since the turn of the century, and in 2023 surpassed one GtCO₂ for the first time.
