Number of children in pre-primary schools in Iceland, 2000-2021
In 2014, the number of children in pre-primary schools in Iceland peaked. That year, the number of children in pre-primary units reached almost 20,000. Since then, it has decreased slightly, though increasing again in 2021 with 19,300 children in primarz school. Despite population growth in the country since 2011, Iceland's birth rate has fallen over the past decade.
