The leading revenue-generating mineral commodity in South Africa in 2023 was platinum group metals (PGMs), which collectively accounted for 370 billion South African rand in revenue (around 19.7 billion U.S. dollars). South Africa is the world's largest producer of platinum and platinum, and is a prominent producer of the other PGMs. Gold ranked second, with 92 billion South African rand in revenue (approximately 4.9 billion U.S. dollars).
