In total around 583 million units of home appliances were shipped worldwide in 2013 and this number is expected to rise to 700 million units by 2017. Of these estimated 700 million units in 2017, over 64 million units of major kitchen and laundry appliances are forecast to be shipped across the United States. This marks an increase of over 9 million units on the amount shipped in 2013.
Of the appliances shipped in the U.S. in 2013, over 16 million were cooking appliances, 6.67 million were dishwashers, and a further 14.68 million were laundry appliances. Within the laundry appliances category, automatic washers made up over half of the total unit shipments in 2013. In 2017, over 12 million refrigerators are expected to be shipped across the United States, as well as over 9 million microwave ovens.
Whirlpool was the leading vendor in the U.S. home appliance industry in 2013 as the corporation held a market share of just under 40 percent. In comparison, its closest competitor, Electrolux held a market share of 24.2 percent. However, the China-based Midea Group remains the global market leader as its worldwide sales in 2013 reached almost 20 billion U.S. dollars, whereas Whirlpool’s revenue stood at 18.8 billion U.S. dollars.
