Telefónica is one of the largest telecommunication companies in the world, offering mobile and fixed services, broadband network and pay-TV services as well as other digital solutions. Telefónica, Movistar, O2 and Vivo are Telefónica’s major brands. Telefónica is the corporate brand, Movistar targets the Spanish-speaking public, O2 is mainly used in Germany and the UK, and Vivo is the brand present in Brazil.
The company operates in more than 20 countries, and has more than 130 thousand employees around the world. Telefónica has a strong presence in its home country Spain, where around 32 thousand employees are located. In 2015, Telefónica generated around 47 billion euros in revenue worldwide of which 27 percent was generated in Spain. Latin America, particularly Brazil, is also an important market for Telefónica. Telefónica Hispanoamérica has about 37,900 employees, while Telefónica Brazil employs about 33,850 people. Together, these two segments account for 55 percent of all Telefónica employees. In terms of revenue, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Colombia combined accounted for almost half of Telefónica’s total global revenue.
The company’s global revenue reached its peak in 2011, when Telefónica generated 62.84 billion euros in revenues. Telefónica’s global net income reached the highest figure to date – 10.17 billion euros – a year before that. In 2015, Telefónica’s generated around 47 billion euros in revenue, nearly three billion euros in operating income, and 2.7 billion euros in net income.
