The British Royal Family spent a total of 89.1 million British pounds in 2023/24, with property maintenance and payroll costs accounting for 47 million and 27.9 million pounds respectively. After these two main costs, travel expenses for the Royal Family were around 4.2 million pounds, with utilities and housekeeping costing 5.7 million and 2.6 million pounds in this period. Overall, this was the Royal Family's lowest expenditure since 2021/21, and a decline on the previous year when overall expenditure reached 107.5 million pounds.
Most popular Royals
According to a survey conducted in early 2024, the most popular member of the Royal Family was Catherine, the Princess of Wales, with 76 percent of respondents having a positive impression of her. Prince William was the next most popular royal, with 73 percent of people having a positive impression of him, followed by his Aunt, Princess Anne at 71 percent, and his Father, King Charles III at 63 percent. By contrast, Prince Andrew was the least popular member of the Royal Family, with just six percent of people having a positive opinion of him.
Royal Finances
A large portion of the Royal Family's expenses are covered by an annual payment from the UK government called the Sovereign Grant, which was 86.3 million pounds in 2023/24. Additional income comes from the private estates of the Royal Family, such as the Duchy of Lancaster, which paid approximately 26.4 million into the Privy Purse in the 2022/23 financial year. The Prince of Wales, meanwhile, receives income from the Duchy of Cornwall, with income from this source reaching 24 million pounds in 2022/23.
