The design of watches with functionalities of smartphones already existed decades ago, but its popularity only surged in recent years. Smartwatch sales are set to boom over the next few years, projected to reach more than 141 million units sold in 2018 and forecast to contribute the most to overall global wearable sales in 2016. The growth in smartwatch sales is mainly driven by consumer demand across North America, Asia Pacific and Western Europe.
In 2014, the main players in the smartwatch market were Samsung, Lenovo, LG and Pebble. Apple entered this new technology category in 2015 as well, launching its highly anticipated smartwatch. Apple immediately became one of the major players in the market with a market share of more than 50 percent.
More than 2 million units of the Apple Watch were shipped in the first quarter of 2016 around 50 percent of the global smartwatch market share. In comparison Samsung shipped 0.6 million smartwatches during the same period, a market share of about 15 percent. Although the Apple Watch and the Samsung Gear are clearly the most popular models in the market at this time, companies such as Lenovo, LG Electronics, and Garmin are selling smartwatches as well.
