Electric passenger car fleet by type in the Netherlands 2018-2023
In 2023, the total electric vehicle fleet in the Netherlands amounted to approximately 698,400. The number of battery electric vehicles (BEV) showed significant growth, from a little under 324,400 BEVs in 2022 to nearly 435,600 in 2023. The volume of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) reached almost 262,200 units in 2023. Considering the electric passenger cars’ performance in the automotive market, after struggling between 2015 and 2017, their market share has been significantly increasing since 2018.
Growth in electric vehicle charging stations
For electric car owners to charge their vehicles along the way, dedicated charging stations are needed along the road network. These stations are fast, public, or semi-public, providing nearly 145,200 charging points combined across the Netherlands, an increase from the previous year, when there were just under 114,300 charging stations opened to the public. Moreover, it is estimated that there were an additional 487,500 private charging points in the Netherlands in 2023.
Tesla Model 3: most popular electric car
Among the leading fully electric passenger cars registered in the Netherlands, the Tesla Model 3 was the most registered electric car in the country's passenger car fleet. The Tesla Model Y accumulated nearly 28,400 registrations and the Kia Niro had around 27,200 units registered. Volkswagen and Tesla are the only two brands represented with two models in the top ten battery-electric cars in the Dutch fleet.
