Number of people buying outdoor clothing in Germany 2016-2020

The number of German consumers who wanted to buy outdoor clothing for exercise or daily activities taking place outside has grown in recent years, so far amounting to roughly 3.59 million in 2020.

Outdoor clothing and equipment are popular in Germany for a variety of reasons, most of all their functionality and practical purposes. Germans enjoy being outside, be it to exercise or to pursue nature-based activities such as hiking or camping. In fact, the number of people owning equipment for tents, camping and outdoor activities has been increasing, with 9.56 million recorded in 2020. Considering that German camping trips in particular may last up to three weeks or more, investing in durable outdoor and camping equipment becomes especially important.

The most popular online store for buying sports and outdoor equipment in Germany is by far amazon.de, overtaking others such as bike24.de and decathlon.de. Outdoor apparel and equipment industry revenue is expected to increase in the coming years, with experts predicting as much as 2.5 billion euros generated in 2025.
