According to an Oxford Economics study, a total of 259 million room nights were booked in Australia in 2019 before hotel bookings were cut by more than half in the following year. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, online travel platforms accounted for around 15% of all hotel room nights in the country. From 2020 to 2021, the number of room night bookings continued to fall, and the share of room nights booked by online travel platforms dropped to just below 10%. However, as travel restrictions eased towards the end of 2021 and into 2022 it is anticipated that the hospitality industry will recover quickly with the return of international travel.
