It turns out there’s only a few grinches out there when it comes to Christmas songs. According to a recent Statista survey, just six percent of respondents in the UK said they don’t like any festive songs at all. For the other 94 percent, it was possible to pick at least one Chrimbo tune they could get on board with.
Up first is Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You, chosen by around four in ten as a favorite Christmas anthem, while The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York comes in second place, picked by nearly three in ten. As this chart shows, Wham!'s Last Christmas and Chris Rea's Driving Home for Christmas appear in third and fourth place, followed by the Band Aid song Do They Know It’s Christmas? in rank five - an unexpectedly high spot, given the long-standing criticism of the song's condescending lyrics and its perpetuation of harmful stereotypes about Africa.
