In Transparency International's most recent Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for the year 2025, India ranked 91st out of 182 countries and territories studied, with a score of 39/100 (where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 very clean). As our infographic shows, this is a slight improvement from the year before (+1 point compared to 2024), but India's score remains a couple of points lower than in 2018 and 2019. In 2018, the country ranked 78th out of 180 countries and territories, and in 2019 it came in 80th position (out of 180).
In 2025, the global CPI average dropped for the first time in more than a decade to just 42 out of 100. The vast majority of countries failed to keep corruption under control: 122 out of 182 scored under 50 in the index, and the number of countries scoring above 80 shrunk from 12 in 2016 to just five. In its report, Transparency International points out that in almost two-thirds of countries that have seen their scores deteriorate significantly since 2012, "there has been a worrying pattern of restriction on freedoms of expression, association and assembly". The organization points out that recent slippage among some democracies (U.S., Sweden, France, etc.) shows corruption risks can rise even where institutions once looked secure.
