According to the Indian government, there were over 614 terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir compared to 252 incidents in the north-east region of India in 2018. While the north-eastern region in the country saw a consistent drop in insurgency incidents, Jammu and Kashmir, in contrast, had a spurt in violence.
The northern-most region of Jammu and Kashmir has been at the center of a prolonged dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947, owing to border issues and religion-based ideological differences. At the same time, the north-eastern region witnessed separatist and militant movements.
