Banco Santander managed to lower their environmental footprint in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2023 compared to 2019, in all scopes measured. Their largest GHG emissions were scope 2 emissions - indirect GHG emissions (location-based) - where the emissions was around 205,292 metric tons of CO2 equivalent in 2023.

These emissions include those derived from the direct consumption of energy (natural gas and diesel, and additionally, in the particular case of Mexico, gasoline and
diesel for automobiles and LPG) and correspond to scope 1, defined by the GHG Protocol standard. To calculate these emissions, the emission factors DEFRA 2020
for 2020 and DEFRA 2019 for 2019 were applied
These emissions include those derived from electricity consumption and correspond to the scope 2 defined by the GHG Protocol standard. In both 2020 and 2019
the IEA (International Energy Agency) emission factors for 2017 have been used.

been considered that in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Poland and USA, part of electricity consumption is green energy. This altogether has meant a reduction of 153,582
tons of CO2 equivalent in 2020 and 138,660 in 2019. For the rest of the electrical energy consumed, the emission factor of the IEA corresponding to each country
has been applied
