Between the first quarter of 2014 and the third quarter of 2021, WhatsApp was the leading mobile application by cumulative downloads. The instant messaging application generated around six billion downloads during the examined period. Facebook Messenger and Facebook app saw an almost similar number of downloads, 5.4 and 5.3 billion downloads respectively. Instagram is the fourth in this ranking with 3.4 billion downloads. All four applications belong to Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook. A popular video creating and sharing platform TikTok is the fifth with 3.2 downloads.
