Both before and after the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Mexico was the leading outbound travel market in the United States based on the share of tourist departures. In 2022, 36 percent of outbound tourist departures from the United States were to Mexico. Canada and the United Kingdom followed in second and third place, representing 12 and four percent of outbound tourist departures, respectively.
