Pharmaceutical e-commerce in Russia - statistics & facts

The pharmaceutical retail market in Russia is undergoing a digital transformation through a steady development of online sales. In general, the e-commerce penetration rate grew in the country over the past decade, which led to an increase in orders from e-pharmacies, or websites selling pharmaceuticals. The demand for pharma e-commerce increased during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In December 2021, online sales accounted for 7.5 percent of pharmacy sales in Russia, excluding Moscow.

Attitude toward online pharma shopping in Russia

Generally, the largest share of Russians viewed digitalization in the pharma industry positively. Roughly two thirds of consumers expressed trust in medical websites, and more than 80 percent had a positive attitude toward receiving a medical prescription via a mobile app in 2020. When asked about the reasons why they purchased pharmaceuticals online in 2021, most respondents named the fact that they could compare prices between different providers. Another mentioned advantage was a wider product range. Most consumers preferred to order medicines from specialized online pharmacies, while one third also used websites of offline pharmacy chains. Two thirds of Russians who bought consumer healthcare goods online did so because they were embarrassed to do it at a physical store.

Leading online pharmacies in Russia

The leader of the Russian pharmaceutical e-commerce market was Apteka.ru, whose gross sales revenue exceeded 59 billion Russian rubles in 2021. Apteka.ru was launched in 2013 by a pharmaceutical distributor Katren. Another major market player was Eapteka. In October 2020, Sber and R-Pharm Group acquired 45 percent of shares in Eapteka, which has operated in the country since 2011 and had over 10 million users per month. Eapteka was the fastest-growing online pharmaceuticals retailer, with a 96 percent revenue growth between 2020 and 2021. Marketplaces like Ozon, SberMegaMarket, and AliExpress Russia also offered medications.
