Despite all the advances in tech in recent years, something distinctly more primitive has been making gains in recent years. According to data from the European Candle Association, the popularity of candles in Europe has grown in terms of consumption from 1.17kg per person in 2011 to 1.45kg in 2016 - a 24% rise. Broken down by country, people in Denmark consumed the most in 2016, with everyone burning through an average of 4.3kg.
