Until now in Germany, those who were ill had to submit their sick leave certificate to their employer themselves. The federal government now wants to change that: The yellow paper certificate is to be abolished and replaced by an electronic certificate as of January 1, 2021. As this chart shows, the sickness rate in Germany has risen again in recent years. Last year, an average of 4.28 percent of workers with public health insurance were off sick.
