In a very close race for the Kentucky governorship, the final results are not yet in, but Democratic candidate Andy Beshear has declared his victory after CNN and other media outlets called the race in his favor.
A win by Beshear would be the eighth governorship in a U.S. state passing over to a Democrat in 2019. Before, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico and Wisconsin had all voted in Democratic governors. Most notably, two states that unexpectedly went for Trump in 2016 – Michigan and Wisconsin – were among those switching up their allegiance.
Which party has the most governors seems to follow an anticyclical pattern. After Obama’s election in 2011, Republicans had the upper hand for many years, but this trend has seemingly started to reverse. In the second term of the Bush presidency (2005-2009), most governors in the U.S. were Democrats.
