According to a survey conducted in 2021 in Japan, the leading factors influencing purchase decisions for sake as a gift were the brewer's name or brand name and the flavor, with more than 50 percent of respondents naming the two factors.
The grade of special designation followed as the third most important factor, with 47 percent of respondents paying attention to the product designation. Special-designation sake refers to premium sake which is graded according to the polishing ratio of rice grains, the ratio of fermented rice used, and whether distilled alcohol is added.
