Antacid tablets in the United States

Antacids, for the most part, are a non-prescription medicine (over-the-counter) used to relieve heartburn or indigestion caused by excess stomach acid. They either directly neutrailze acidity, increasing the pH, or reversibly reduce or block the secretion of acid by gastric cells.

Antacid tablets fall into the gastrointestinal tablets product category, which happened to be the seventh top health and beauty care product category in the United States in 2015. Disregarding private label brands, Prilosec OTC was the leading antacid tablet brand in the United States, with sales just under 284 million U.S. dollars. Prilosec OTC is owned by the American multi-national consumer goods company Procter & Gamble, the second leading antacid tablet vendor in the United States, excluding private label vendors.

Despite the minor decrease in sales in this product category, pharmacy sales are growing in the grocery channel for a number of reasons. For one, having a pharmacy presence creates many opportunities for retailers to provide additional services to customers. As a result, shelf strategy has become a primary focus for retailers. Placing products where consumers expect to find it is critical; creating a visual interruption at the point of purchase has proven to be a cost effective and successful way to generate awareness and trial in the category.
