Although general milk consumption in Spain has decreased since the beginning of the decade, the consumption of semi-skimmed milk as a healthier and lower-fat alternative to whole milk has grown and has remained recently between 32 and 34 liters consumed per person.
As the European Union maintains its status as one of the regions with the most dairy consumption, Spain’s milk industry is declining. Nonetheless, it persists as one of the most important sectors in the Spanish agricultural business. Its production value reached approximately ten million euros in 2022, and the at-home expenditure on these products reached its all-time high that same year.
When looking at consumption behavior, yogurt appears to be the preferred dairy product in Spanish households, especially skimmed and flavored yogurt. Additionally, cheese is also very popular among Spanish people. The nation offers a large range of cheeses, including, among others, Manchego cheese.
