Gender distribution in the top pay quartile of selected retailers in the UK 2017

This statistic shows the distribution of women and men employed at selected retailers in the top pay quartile in the United Kingdom (UK) as of April 2017. Of the retailers included, the Co-operative Group had the lowest share of women in the top pay quartile, at 30.8 percent. Marks & Spencer, Primark and Next are three retailers which have more women than men in the highest pay quartile, with shares of 66.3 percent, 61.7 percent and 60 percent, respectively .
Since retail is a female dominated industry, there tends to be a higher share of women in higher paid positions than in other industries such as finance and insurance, and the professional, scientific and technical sectors. In some of the UK's largest banks, the share of women in the top pay quartile is as low as 19 percent.

Supplementary notes

* The retailers included are among the leading UK retailers based worldwide sales as of 2016. Some retailers are not included in this chart, as the relevant information is not provided by the source.
All retailers included have 20,000 or more employees.

The source added the following information for methodology. "Pay quartiles are calculated by splitting all employees in an organization into four even groups according to their level of pay. Looking at the proportion of women in each quartile gives an indication of women's representation at different levels of the organization."

Fourth quartile = lowest paid; First/top quartile= highest paid.
