Retail revenue from the Christmas trading period in Germany 2005-2023

Customers in Germany spent around 120.8 billion euros during the Christmas trading period of 2023, based on a forecast. This was an increase compared to the year before. Sales revenue has increased annually during the specified time period, despite the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic throughout 2020 and 2021.

Christmas online retail

Christmas and the preceding months, especially November and December, are some of the busiest times for German retailers, as well as being extremely profitable. Online retail sales have only grown in the last decade. In fact, based on an earlier survey, most online retailers expected to earn more from retail sales during the Christmas season.

Buying Christmas gifts

In 2022, Germans spent around 520 euros per person on Christmas presents. Current inflation levels may have influenced the slight decrease in spending compared to the year before. When looking at spending on Christmas gifts by shopping location, shopping online was the most popular option.
