Among small and medium-sized online retail businesses across the globe that participated in a 2021 survey, 62 percent reported increased fraud attempts since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The higher the size of the company, the higher the proportion of online merchants reporting an increase in fraud attempts. While 80 percent of medium-sized businesses saw a rise in fraud attempts due to the crisis, this figure was 82 percent for large companies.

The source breaks down the size of online businesses as follows:
- SMB (50,000 to 5 million U.S. dollars)
- Mid-Market (5 million to 50 million U.S. dollars)
- Enterprise (50 million U.S. dollars or more)
