This statistic shows the distribution of out of home snack occasions in the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2014, by snack type. The data is from a survey conducted for Bord Bia Irish Food Board, which recorded 1,612 occasions when respondents consumed snacks outside the home. On 22 percent of these occasions, respondents snacked on confectionery items, while on another 15 percent of occasions respondents ate fruit.

* Research was conducted in two phases as follows:
Qualitative: four focus groups with 16-35 year olds in Ireland and several online discussion groups in the UK, with 56 respondents broken down by life stage and region.
Quantitative: online survey across Ireland and the UK with nationally represetative sample of 3,000 respondents, plus additional data from mums recording a 'snacking' diary for kids aged 10-15 years (= 4,886 snacking occasions).
The source states that findings between Ireland and the UK were very similar and therefore outlined figures are an average across both markets. In total the data covers 12,244 snacking occasions.
