In 2022, 177 land and environmental protectors lost their lives globally. Colombia had the highest number of deaths, with 60 lives lost. However, Honduras had the most deaths per capita, at 14 lives lost. Indigenous people account for most of the 177 lives lost.

The CPT monitors rural conflicts affecting small-scale farmers, landless communities, Indigenous peoples and traditional communities, as well as rural trade unionists, many of which overlap with Global Witness’ definition of land and environmental defenders."
