The retail revenue of the consumer electronics (CE) market in the United States constantly increased during the period from 2012 to 2019. The revenue was originally forecasted to hit over 420 billion U.S. dollars by 2020, before the coronavirus pandemic. As of July 2020, the revised forecast suggested a revenue of under 407 billion U.S. dollars, which was a slight decrease from 2019. Based on the projected retail sales for 2021, consumer electronics retail sales in the United States reached 442 billion U.S. dollars. Smartphones were the products accounting for the largest retail revenue within the consumer electronics sector, comprising 79 billion U.S. dollars in revenue in 2020. Gaming software and services came in second, followed by laptops and notebook PCs.

Amazon is the consumer electronics retailer with the largest amount of sales in North America. Best Buy followed in the ranking, right before Apple Computer retail stores. Among the other top ten consumer electronics retailers on the continent are Walmart, Hewlett Packard, and Dell.
