Spending in the global workplace training industry 2007-2019

Since the great recession, when the global workplace training industry was hit heavily, the industry has rebounded strongly, posting year-on-year growth to reach an estimated market size of 370.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2019.

Workplace training industry

Workplace training refers to the teaching of employees the skills they need to perform their job, such as sales techniques or how to use company systems. Training in specific skills can be provided by in-house staff or outsourced to an external provider, while training more general skills can be provided through tuition at an educational institution. A variety of different methods are used to teach skills, with the most common being instructor-led classes and online courses.

Use of technology

One component in the growing market size of the workplace training industry is the increase in the amount spent on training per employee. Given the increasing availability of technology-based learning, this may seem surprising, as the use of technologies could be expected to decrease costs. However, there are multiple barriers to adopting technology-based learning, including the costs associated with development and maintenance. Furthermore, technology-based learning methods are generally less popular amongst workers.
