During the coronavirus, many businesses introduced a hybrid working model, allowing employees to work from home or an alternative location. This led to a large share of rental space sitting empty. In New York City, only about 37 percent of the space used before the pandemic was physically in use in March 2022. Though the return to the office in other cities such as Tokyo and Berlin had advanced more, it was still not at 100 percent.
