A study in March 2020 showed that around 47 percent of surveyed U.S. adults had encountered a lot or at least some news about the coronavirus which seemed completely made up, highlighting the issue of fake news circulation and unreptuable sources seeking to capitalize on the public's need for news and updates in times of crisis. Interestingly, more right-leaning audiences professed to have come across mae up news than Democrats, with just 16 percent of Republicans saying that they had seen made up news about the coronavirus, compared to 23 percent of news consumers who left-leaning.
