As of February 2022, the majority of the leading apps appearing first to users on the Google Play Store results page were free or freemium apps. Paid downloads appeared to be a less frequent monetization option, but still interested 5.3 percent of the highest-ranking gaming apps, as well as 1.5 percent of the highest-ranking health and fitness apps. Approximately 89 percent of all finance apps were free, while around 11.2 percent adopted a freemium model. Approximately 82 percent of the highest-grossing social media apps adopted a freemium model, while around 17 percent were fully free.
