TUI AG is a leading multinational travel and tourism company based in Hanover, Germany. One of the largest tourism groups worldwide and a key player in the package holidays market, it fully or partially owns 1,200 travel agencies, over 400 hotels, 16 cruise liners, and five European airlines with approximately 130 aircraft. The group has a particularly strong presence in the United Kingdom, with the number of TUI AG employees in the country reaching around 10.5 thousand, higher than in Germany or Spain. As of June 2023, the company operated over 300 outlets in the UK, making it one of the leading travel agencies in the United Kingdom, together with Hays Travel and Advantage.

Has TUI recovered from the impact of COVID-19?

Due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on global travel and tourism, TUI AG’s revenue worldwide declined to under five billion euros in the 2020/2021 fiscal year, a 75 percent decline from 2018/2019. With the ease of the travel restrictions in 2022, the company’s revenue bounced back to over 16 billion euros but remained below pre-pandemic levels. When looking at the revenue breakdown by TUI’s operating segment, the Northern region – including tour operator activities and airlines in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the Nordics – experienced the fastest rebound, with revenue from that market being just 0.6 percent shy of the 2018/2019 fiscal year. Overall, the impact of the health crisis on the group’s financials was still evident in 2021/2022, as the net income of TUI AG was negative for more than 200 million euros. That being said, the company’s net loss was significantly lower than in the previous two years, showing positive signs of recovery.

Package holidays market: what are TUI’s main competitors?

According to Statista Consumer Insights Global survey, TUI and Jet2holidays emerged as the main brands for package holiday bookings in the United Kingdom, with nearly 30 percent of respondents reporting having purchased an all-inclusive vacation from one of these companies. While TUI also topped the list of brands for package holiday bookings in Germany, ahead of Ab-in-den-Urlaub and HolidayCheck, it ranked lower in other key European tourism markets. For instance, when asked about the providers used for booking package holidays in Spain, less than five percent of surveyed Spaniards mentioned TUI, while a third of the sample relied on Viajes El Corte Inglés and a quarter on eDreams.
