Sporting goods retail stores in the United States

With a total of over 4,500 stores across the country in 2014, Walmart is the sporting goods retailer with the most retail units in the United States. It has more than twice as many stores as MarMaxx, its closest competitor in terms of number of stores in the U.S.. Despite the increasing popularity of online shopping, sporting goods stores remained the most popular channel of distribution for sporting goods in the United States and an estimated 24 percent of sporting goods purchases were made in these stores in 2013.

Sales in sporting goods stores amounted to over 43 billion U.S. dollars in the United States in 2013. This marks an increase of almost 10 billion U.S. dollars on the figure from 2006. U.S. consumer purchases of sporting goods are also on the increase with the total population spending over 62 billion U.S. dollars in this industry in 2013.

Walmart’s athletic department generated revenue of 9.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2013, making it the largest sporting goods retailer in the United State in terms of revenue. Its closest competitor was Dick’s Sporting Goods, whose total revenue in 2013 was 6 billion U.S. dollars. Of this revenue generated by Dick’s Sporting Goods in 2013, some 1.8 billion U.S. dollars was in the apparel market and a further 1.3 billion U.S. dollars was generated in the footwear industry. Despite having over 2,000 stores in the United States, MarMaxx’s revenue of just over 1 billion U.S. dollars in 2013 made it only the 19th largest sporting goods retailer in the country.
