E-commerce use of consumers in the European Union in 2017, by country

Share of consumers aged 16 to 75 years old who used online shopping in the EU-28 countries in 2017

E-commerce use of consumers in the European Union in 2017, by country This statistic shows the share of consumers aged 16 to 75 years old in countries within the European Union who used e-commerce to order goods or services in 2017. Within the EU-28, 57 percent of the consumers used online shopping. According to the source this is an increase compared to 2007, when this percentage was 30 percent. The country where it is most common to purchase goods or services online is the United Kingdom, with 82 percent of the people shopping online. Within Germany, 75 percent of consumers used e-commerce. B2C e-commerce sales in Western Europe are forecasted to amount to a sum of approximately 448.69 billion U.S. dollars by 2019.
Language barriers and the local presence of Amazon seem to be important drivers for online shopping in Europe. Online shoppers from Ireland, Austria and Belgium, for example, seem more likely to buy products from a foreign e-commerce retailer. Chances are less in Poland and the Netherlands, however, as both countries have a strongly developed domestic e-commerce market.
